Every owner of a property with historical substance sooner or later reaches the point where they deal with the fascinating question of what came before: How many evening events have already taken place within these four walls? What celebrations were held in the garden? Who planted the lilac by the house wall? What decisions were made in this house? And what paths of life unfolded here?
History of a Bogenhausen villa
These questions were also asked by the owner of a century-old villa in Bogenhausen's Herzogpark. For years, he had the house and garden restored to their original state, and in the process, he wanted to know more: What had happened in this house over the last hundred years? Who were the people responsible for the many layers of paint that were uncovered during the restoration? He commissioned the Corporate Publishing department of the renowned, which specializes in archival work and historical backgrounds Hanser Publishers, to take up the matter and do some research.
A house as a mirror of German history
The result is the fascinating biography of a house that reflects a century of German history: the builder of the magnificent villa, a banker, invited guests to lavish dance evenings and „little punch“ in the 1920s before the Great Depression brought a sudden end to the colorful hustle and bustle. In 1937, a famous Jewish art dealer bought the large estate and was forced into emigration by the National Socialists a short time later; he was never granted the chance to live in his own house for long. After the Second World War, a publishing house resided in the villa on Herzogpark and shaped Munich's social life for decades.

A book about one's own four walls
Meticulous research and historical craftsmanship had brought to light sensational details and previously unimagined stories that told of triumphs and failures, love and separations, screaming injustice and visions. And all these stories, the entire biography of the house, can now be read in a magnificently designed and richly illustrated volume whose design references the villa and its architectural features: the cover picks up on the unusual, oxblood red color of the house, while an elegant copper edge gilding is inspired by the estate's copper-colored dormer windows. And the typeface used was created by the famous designer Lucien Bernhard, who was also responsible for the villa's interior design in the 1920s. The result is a book for browsing and lingering, marveling and reading: If it is true that it is people who breathe life into a house, then the villa is now more alive than ever before.
