Slatted roof – a growing trend in German gardens

Whether freestanding or connected to the house, a slat-covered roof not only offers protection from the sun and weather, but also enhances the appearance of the garden or terrace. Slat-covered roofs are becoming increasingly popular in Germany. They offer a range of advantages and are available in various variants.

Flexible sun protection

Compared to awnings and sunshades, lamellar roofs have a number of advantages. First and foremost, they offer great flexibility. The individual slats of the roof can be adjusted easily to the sun’s movement throughout the day. With awnings, the crank must be used several times a day to adjust them. With sunshades, you may need to change them periodically. However, with a lamellar roof, a simple push of a button on the remote control is enough. A control via an app is also possible. Furthermore, the position of the slats can be adjusted to control how much sunlight can enter.

How does a slat roof cope with adverse weather conditions?

Similarly, when windy or rainy, lamellar roofs offer reliable protection. In their closed position, the slats form an impermeable roof, preventing any rain from entering. Because each individual slat has a drainage system, there is no need to worry that any remaining water will rain down when the roof is later opened. At the same time, lamellar roofs are built robust enough to withstand even the strongest storms. Even wind speeds of up to 160 km/h pose no problem for the roof. In the event of heavy snowfall, a lamellar roof can withstand a snow load of up to 200 kg/m².

What extras does a slat roof offer?

Slatted roofs offer the advantage that light supply and air circulation can be controlled at will by changing the position of the slats. Depending on the model, it is possible to fully retract the slats to allow, for example, uninterrupted sunbathing. Integrated lighting elements and heating radiators enable comfortable use during the cooler evenings.

Furthermore, the slat roof can be equipped with a suitable weather sensor. This enables the roof to close automatically in bad weather. Additional protection against wind and weather is provided by glass panels and wall elements, which can be added on request on many models. In combination with lighting and heating, this creates an additional living and leisure space in the garden. Optional outdoor sockets and weatherproof flap covers also allow for convenient use of music systems, an electric grill or an outdoor kitchen.

What options are there?

A slat-panel roof is designed for use in the garden or on the terrace. It is possible to install the roof either freestanding or attached to a nearby wall. The openness or closedness of the space beneath the roof can be determined by the user. In addition to sliding panels, for example, wooden walls or side awnings can also be used here. In this way, a porch or any other area in the garden can be transformed into a wind- and weather-resistant living room for outdoor use at the touch of a button.

There are also variants where the slats of the roof are replaced with a retractable awning-like fabric roof. A high-quality slat roof is often manufactured to order. In combination with the various design elements, the roof can therefore always be adapted to the specific garden environment and terrace shape.

How is a slat-covered roof cleaned?

Because the roof is exposed to the elements all year round, cleaning is recommended once or twice a year. However, this does not require any major effort. Brighter dirt can be removed first by simply brushing it off. Then warm water and a cleaning solution should be used to wipe the slats and the frame structure clean. To preserve the material, aggressive chemicals should be avoided. Finally, the entire roof can be sprayed with garden hose.
