The 5 best summer getaway ideas in Munich
Would you like to enjoy your free time in Munich or take a break from everyday life in the summer? With its parks and gardens, the Bavarian capital offers many opportunities for relaxation as well as sporting activities. Discover the five best ideas for a summer break.
Relaxing in the Cabinet Garden – an insider tip
The Cabinet Garden is part of the Residenz, which is almost always overrun by tourists. It is something of an insider tip, as even many Munich residents do not know it. Located behind the All Saints' Court Church, it is surrounded by high walls and enchanting in its design. The garden can be accessed from Marstallplatz or via an open staircase from the Residenz. With its symmetrical layout, shallow water basins, light-limestone paths lined with plane trees, rosebushes, and magnolias, and many benches, the garden invites visitors to linger. You can reach the garden via the Odeonsplatz U-Bahn station or the Marienplatz U-Bahn and S-Bahn station.
A green oasis – the Hofgarten
The Hofgarten is a green oasis in the heart of Munich and the city's oldest park. Hedges and flower beds in the Italian style characterize the 400-year-old garden, which was created by Elector Maximilian I. Bordering the Residenz to the south, the garden is framed on two sides by arcades with frescoes that invite visitors to stroll. Those seeking relaxation or wanting to unwind can do so just as easily as those looking to engage in sports. On warm summer evenings, the gravel areas belong to boules players. If you like, you can try your hand at this French game yourself. The Diana Temple forms the heart of the Hofgarten. It offers good acoustics. Those fond of dancing can dance tango or salsa to the music of street musicians. You can round off your evening in the Hofgarten with a cappuccino at Luigi Tambosi or a prosecco at Charles Schumann. The Hofgarten can be reached via the Odeonsplatz U-Bahn station. Contact us – we are always available
Relaxation in the Blue Spa Bar above the rooftops of Munich
At the Blue Spa Bar, located on the roof of the „Bayerischer Hof“ hotel, you can relax even if you are not a guest at the hotel. On the sun terrace, you can treat yourself to a drink or delicious food. With a Blue Spa Barbecue in the summer or at the Polar Bar in the winter, you always have a wonderful view of Munich. On a clear day, you can even see the Alps. With a bit of luck, you might meet a celebrity at the next table. If you would like to relax a little longer in the Blue Spa, you can buy a day pass. The hotel can be reached via the Marienplatz subway/S-Bahn station.
The English Garden – always a rewarding destination
The English Garden offers many opportunities for relaxation or activities. Many beautiful spots are located in the southern part of the garden. A challenge for surfers is the Eisbach, which shoots out from under a bridge with great force. You can relax with organic snacks and drinks at the cult kiosk „Fräulein Grüneis“. A lovely backdrop for enjoying the delicious snacks is the shallow waterfall that plunges into the Eisbach. The southern part of the garden can be reached by tram, Tivolistraße or Paradiesstraße stop.
Visiting Sisi at the Elisabethmarkt
One of the four permanent markets in Munich is the Elisabethmarkt, named after Empress Elisabeth of Austria. On Nordendstraße, there is a pavilion with one of the most beautiful beer gardens. If you arrive before 12:00 PM, you can get the white sausage for just one euro. Delicious snacks, soups, and Italian delicacies are also available at the numerous market stalls, in the small food booths, and at the Weil butcher shop.
